5  Roommate Pet Peeves

Whether you are moving into the dorm or you are moving off campus, you may find that you are confronted for the first time with a roommate. A roommate may or may not be your friend, but they are going to be sharing your space and in some cases, sharing your stuff. If you want to make sure that you are not at each other’s throats within the first month, make yourself aware of these common roommate pet peeves.

Noise  Plenty of people aren’t aware of how loud they are, whether it is when they are listening to music or they are entertaining guests. This is a big problem when one person is much louder than their roommate. Talk about this before it becomes a problem; schedule loud times in advance and agree to be reasonable with each other.

Destructive Tendencies  If you have a roommate who is careless or angry a lot, you may find that the things that you have agreed on sharing end up broken or damaged. This is where renter’s insurance can help you. Insist that they pitch in. Do this together and make sure that your stuff stays in good shape.

Food Theft  It’s too easy to simply swipe a few slices of cheese here or some bread there and before you know it, one person is buying all the food and the other person is only eating it. Decide how you are going to deal with the food situation before it becomes an issue. If someone is eating more than their share, ask them to give the person buying food some cash here and there. Some people do like to cook, so they might want to just assume cooking duties in exchange for grocery money.

Messiness  The mess level can be a problem, particularly if the people who are living together have never lived on their own before. Weekly cleaning can help a great deal, as well as an agreement that the common areas should be kept very clean. If you are dealing with a messy roommate, talk with them about it and make sure that your words are being heard.

Too Friendly  You wouldn’t think that a roommate could be too friendly, but it is entirely possible. If your roommate is always in your space and wants to do everything from studying together to watching movies, be firm and set limits early on. This is better for everyone concerned.
