Go to College Cheaper

The first thing I would suggest, if you want to go to college cheaper, is to purchase a copy of my booklet entitled "How to Go to College Cheaper".  However, if you want to read a few of the suggestions I provide there, read the suggestions below.

In addition, you should know that I guarantee the information I provide in the booklet will save you money.  If you don't save at least the amount you pay for the booklet, let me know and I'll refund your entire purchase price.

  • Buy and ride a bike – you’ll get exercise, get to sleep a few extra minutes in the mornings, save the frustration of hunting for a decent spot and save money on a parking permit and gas.  It’s greener too!
  • Coupons, coupons, coupons.  The back of the phone book is a great place to look, also look in the campus newspaper, plus there are often coupon books given out at the beginning of the school year or semester by local merchants.  Also check out the Sunday newspaper for coupons, and use those for products you purchase when you go shopping.  If nothing else, cut out coupons for the places you already eat and order what you have a coupon for.`
  • Take advantage of “free feeds”.  It may seem like I’m suggesting you become a mooch here, but one of the tried and true ways to get college students who are busy finishing their degree in management to attend anything is to provide food – usually pizza.  So there should be plenty of free snacks and meals available, with few strings attached.  Organizations looking for new members serve food, many events have a reception prior to their start, campus departments often host open houses and receptions to introduce new students or staff and food is often served, and during finals week there will often be free snacks or meals available.
  • Pick up all the free samples you can.  College campuses are attractive places to test market, introduce and/or promote products aimed at people your age.  Many of those products are food and drinks, and it won’t take long to figure out where the central location on your campus is.  Anytime you see someone there with a table set up, cruise by to see what’s up.  You may accidentally get registered to vote, or roped into hearing about some organization you’re not interested in, but you’ll also get some free drinks, food samples, and/or coupons.
  • Do your own laundry, and shop around for the best price.  The popular and/or nicest places are probably not the cheapest.  Whether you live there or not, try the laundry facilities on campus – they’re probably among the cheapest.  Paying a laundry service to wash your stuff is convenient but expensive!  Doing your own laundry is cheap and gives you a big chunk of quality study time – there won’t be anything else to do...
  • Financial Aid – if you have a major that costs significantly more than others’, talk to the financial aid office to see if you can receive special consideration – e.g. aviation majors have to pay for flight costs other students don’t.
  • Financial Aid – if you have a MAJOR change in family income, family status, employment status (lasting quite a while), or something else that makes the coming year significantly different from a financial perspective, than last year, go talk to the financial aid office to see if you can get special consideration.
