Videos on College LifeI’ve recently become aware of a handful of interesting resources that should be very helpful to everyone involved in the college application and selection process, but especially students. Some include only materials endorsed by the colleges themselves. Some are completely open and include both complimentary and critical reviews of colleges. Each is valuable in it’s own way. Remember my philosophy… ”the more you know about what to expect when you get to college, the more likely you are to be successful”.
College Click TV (www.collegeclicktv.com) has TONS of videos of college students talking about their colleges – raving, slamming, reviewing their campus, major, professors, athletics, financial aid, and more. Dozens of colleges have videos – my alma mater had 102 videos to view. More college video can be found by looking on I-Tunes. Within the podcasts section, you will find I-Tunes U, then select Universities and Colleges. There, a special section exists, dedicated to audio and video files posted by the universities themselves. There are dozens of schools with files posted. For example, Texas A & M University has an impressive variety of files available, and from a college I can’t remember, I found an audio campus tour – a podcast you would download onto your I-Pod and use to show yourself around campus. Another source of video on college in general or a specific college is YouTube.com. You will have to sort through several ridiculous videos to get to useful ones, but they are there. In addition, your school of choice might have their own channel, or collection of endorsed videos, for the public to view. I had trouble finding what I was looking for, but I think you should be able to find one of these by searching for the college you are interested in, then clicking on “Channels” above the results. Another site I THINK can be used to help find out about college is Twitter (www.twitter.com), where people constantly update what they’re doing in short posts all day (and night) long. If you know someone who already attends college (or a school you’re interested in), sign up to “follow” them on Twitter. Many schools have Twitter accounts and are publicizing them through their Admissions web sites, so look for one at your schools of choice. You can also simply Google or Yahoo search for “college blog” and you’ll find tons of college student blogs where you can read about what college students all over the world think and do. Again, college admissions sites are also linking their prospective students to their current students’ lives though blogs. Check the prospective students’ sites at the colleges you’re considering.
